News > Local Cambridge firm, Cam Trade Marks & IP Services, represents the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys at NEC, Birmingham
February 7 2008. Roman Cholij of Cam Trade Marks and IP Services helped advise visitors to the Government Business Zone at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), about their trade mark and other Intellectual Property needs. This event was part of an Intellectual Property Awareness Campaign undertaken by the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA) alongside the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO).
The UK IPO is the official government body responsible for granting Intellectual Property (IP) rights in the United Kingdom (UK). These rights include: Patents, Designs, Trade marks and Copyright. It is an Executive Agency of the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS).
ITMA is the professional body for registered trade mark attorneys in the United Kingdom. It has over 1600 members worldwide and some 600 in the UK. Attorneys in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire, as well as further afield, are listed on ITMA’s website:
www.itma.org.uk. What does an attorney do? A trade mark attorney:
- Conducts full and thorough research to ensure a trade mark is free to use - a mark may already be registered by another organisation or it too closely resembles that of another organisation
- Provides clients with reassurance that their trade mark registrations are being handled by a legal specialist in this field - ensuring, for example, that trade mark applications meet the criteria laid down by the relevant trade mark authorities
- Uses his/her expertise to argue cases with the Trade Marks registry
- Addresses problems arising from inappropriate or un-advised applications
- Advises on correct use of the trade mark and on renewals
- Provides high quality legal advice when dealing with cases of infringement and passing-off
- Advises on strategic brand use, development, extension and licensing.
